International. Bloomberg conducted a study on rising global energy demand in which the United States and China found that accounted for 54 percent of the 1,932 terawatt hours of electricity used by residential and commercial air conditioning devices in 2018.
The report indicates that the increase in demand for this type of solution will raise electricity consumption in the future to an equivalent of the current total consumed by the European Union. Saudi Arabia, India and Japan are next on the list and complete a group that accounts for two-thirds of global demand.
By mid-century, global air conditioning demand will more than double to 4,764 terawatt hours, equivalent to more than 12 percent of total electricity consumption, Bloomberg reported.
The study also indicated that sales of air conditioners have increased since the beginning of the decade, from 85 million units in 2010 to 110 million in 2017.
The International Energy Agency noted last year that the growing demand for electricity for air conditioning is "one of the most critical blind spots in the current energy debate." It will be the largest source of increased demand after the industry by 2050, with serious consequences for the climate unless energy-efficient technologies are employed.
