International. The Meliá Hotels International hotel chain revealed that it has achieved ISO 50,001 certification after implementing an energy management system for the entire company following the guidelines of this certification.
ISO 50.001 is an international standard that helps Meliá meet its commitments to reduce energy use based on a process of constant improvement. The guidelines help companies improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through opportunities for improvement identified in energy management systems.
In its final report, Bureau Veritas, the organization responsible for auditing the systems, highlighted "improved energy performance with measurable results in relation to energy efficiency, use and consumption." The report also values positively the internal tools developed by Meliá to improve energy management as part of its commitment to innovation in eco-efficiency.
Environmental policy
The energy management system is based on Meliá Hotels' International Environmental Policy, which provides a framework for defining and monitoring the Company's energy efficiency objectives. "Since Meliá launched its internal resource management program (the SAVE Project) in 2005, the Company has not ceased its efforts to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in its facilities. The ISO 50.001 certification is a recognition of the results achieved during this period and the future commitment to sustainability reflected in the Company's strategic plan," the official statement reads.
Gabriel Escarrer, Executive Vice President and CEO of Meliá, commented: "As a travel company and the international market in resort hotels, we also have the responsibility to lead the fight against climate change." From 2011 to 2017 compared to 2007 to 2011, the company reduced CO2 emissions per stay by 12.6%, electricity consumption by 13.1% and water consumption by more than 8%.
