United States. A group of 13 Republicans are urging President Trump to send the Kigali Amendment to eliminate HFC refrigerants to the Senate for ratification.
"By sending this amendment to the Senate, it will help secure America's place as a world leader in various manufacturing industries and, in turn, give American workers an edge over their competitors in the international market," according to the published letter sent in early June.
The Obama administration signed the deal in Kigali, Rwanda, nearly two years ago, just before the 2016 presidential election. The amendment to the 1982 Montreal Protocol would phase out the use of certain refrigerants used in air conditioning and other refrigeration systems because they have been found to exacerbate global warming.
Manufacturers have worried that Trump could overturn the Kigali agreement, similar to his decision on the Paris Agreement. As other countries move to other refrigerant chemicals, U.S. companies will cease to be globally competitive if the U.S. does not sign.
The senators added that nearly 600,000 U.S. workers are ready to "benefit significantly" from the agreement agreed in Kigali for the transition to alternative refrigerants. They said the deal would increase manufacturing jobs by 33,000 and increase exports by $4.8 billion.
