International. A German high-speed train company called Deutsche Bahn has installed eight air cycle air conditioning systems in its second series of ICE 3.1 wagons. Cold air systems are based on environmentally friendly technology. The processed air is taken from the environment and expanded with an electrically driven cooling turbine.
The resulting reduction in pressure produces a simultaneous reduction in temperature. An air-to-air heat exchanger is used to extract energy from the incoming air, which is fed into the cabin. In the next step, the air processed in the open circuit of the cold air system is compressed again at room pressure and then released to the outside.
As cold air systems only consist of a few components, they are not only lightweight, but also simple and economical for service. In addition, the system is characterized by very low operating costs and low energy consumption, according to the manufacturer called Liebherr based in Toulouse (France).
