International. Coop, one of the largest supermarket chains in Switzerland, has installed a new refrigeration system and integrated heat pump at its chocolate factory near Basel. The system provides cooling and heating for the chocolate production process.
The new Eco-Pack glycol chiller is a compact unit for medium capacity industrial refrigeration applications. In a closed circuit, ammonia is condensed with water, working with very low coolant loads.
Manufactured by the Spanish company RV Cooling Tech, the new chiller can work with two types of condensation: by means of water or with an air-cooled condenser. Each chiller integrates a screw compressor, and the six chillers together offer a cooling capacity of 6,000 kW.
The unique aspect of this system is the integration of the heat pump system with the refrigerator with a water circuit, says Mikel Diaz, representative of the company. "Heat pumps are based on piston compressors, which are capable of condensing ammonia at high temperatures, offering a total of 2,000 kW of heating capacity. Next, ammonia condensates at 65 degrees Celsius bring water to 60 degrees," Diaz said.
