Colombia. It began the construction of an educational institution with international sustainability standards that aims to obtain LEED certification, which will be located in the municipality of Yumbo, department of Valle del Cauca, Southwest of that country.
The Argos Foundation (Member of the CCCS), the Ministry of National Education, Findeter, the Mayor's Office of Yumbo and the Epsa Foundation joined forces to start the project of the Gabriel García Márquez Educational Institution Panorama Headquarters. In this new institution, which will benefit more than 250 students, the allied entities will invest about $4.7 billion pesos.
The project will be the first public school in Colombia built under international sustainability standards with a view to obtaining LEED certification.
To obtain the certification, the educational institution must meet specific criteria from its designs and execution in aspects such as: efficiency in water consumption, indoor environmental quality, sustainable site, use of materials and resources, energy and atmosphere, innovations in the design and importance of the building for the area.
For the Argos Foundation and its director Carolina Jaramillo Ferrer, "this project is a very important step in the promotion of the culture of sustainability in our country and a benchmark that will motivate the creation of this type of buildings from all sectors, since construction under LEED criteria brings with it important advantages for educational communities such as: a longer useful life of the school, savings in water and energy consumption, less maintenance of the facilities, among other aspects that translate into the care of our environment and a contribution for the next generations".
