United States. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized six organizations for their leadership in replacing and upgrading roof HVAC units as part of an advanced roof unit campaign for building improvement.
Together, these organizations in a single year have saved an estimated Btu 1 trillion or more than $11 million in utility costs with efficient roof units (RTUs), replacements, modernizations, and quality and operational management. Since 2013, 250 members of this campaign have upgraded 59,500 RTUs for a total energy savings of 10 billion BTUs, or US$93 million in cost savings.
DOE notes that energy consumption in a building's cooling and ventilation can be reduced by 20-50% when obsolete equipment is replaced by high-efficiency units or adapted with advanced controls. In fact, a building owner can save as much as $3,700 per RTU – equivalent to $6.7 billion and 670 trillion BTUs per year.
The following organizations are being recognized this year for their innovative RTU management approaches that resulted in significant energy savings in commercial buildings:
• Arby's Restaurant Group Inc.
• Giant Tiger Stores Limited
• Southern California Edison
• Target Corp.
• Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
• Whole Foods Market
