Mexico. Recently, the closure of the first phase of the Project for the Management and Destruction of Residual Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) was carried out in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León.
Participating in the closure of the first phase of the Project for the Management and Destruction of Residual Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) in Mexico, the Undersecretary of Management for Environmental Protection of Semarnat, Martha Garciarivas Palmeros, assured that Mexico is ready to demonstrate that a low-carbon development is possible and that it is carrying out very concrete actions to achieve it.
He reported that to date the use of 97.5% of the maximum level of consumption of ozone-depleting substances has been eliminated, totally replacing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), carbon tetrachloride, halons and methyl bromide.
Garciarivas Palmeros added that only Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are the only ozone-depleting substances that are still used mainly in air conditioners, which is why they are executing a National Plan for the Elimination of HCFCs, which aims to eliminate 67.5% of the consumption of these substances by 2022.
The project is implemented by Semarnat with the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and carried out in coordination with the industrial sector and "in 2015 there was a 40% reduction in the elimination of HCFCs, so we will easily achieve the goal in the coming years," said the Undersecretary.
This project has provided support to different industrial sectors such as refrigeration, air conditioning and pharmaceuticals, and has also contributed to improving the management for the correct disposal of goods in the country's customs.
