Mexico. Carrier announced that it plans to move its operations to Mexico from Indianapolis over the next three years, a move that is estimated to impact around 1,400 jobs.
The jobs will begin the transition to a location near the existing plant in Monterrey in 2017, and will conclude in 2019. Carrier said the move is subject to discussions with local union representatives. Eligible employees will be entitled to compensation for benefits, including access to the company's Employee School Program, which pays for tuition, books, and fees at accredited institutions of higher education.
In an official statement, Chris Nelson, President of North American HVAC Systems and Services, said: "This move is intended to address the challenges we continue to face in a rapidly changing HVAC industry; with the continued migration of the HVAC industry to Mexico, including our suppliers and competitors, and ongoing cost and pricing pressures driven, in part, by new regulatory requirements."
"Relocating our operations to a region where we have an existing infrastructure and a strong supplier base will allow us to operate more profitably so that we can continue to produce high-quality HVAC products that are competitively positioned, while meeting customer needs."
"This decision is difficult and recognizes the impact on employees, their families and the community. We are committed to ensuring that our employees are treated with respect and working closely with their representatives in this transition."
The company said its residential and engineering HVAC headquarters will remain in Indianapolis.
