International. Emerson Climate Technologies announced that it has completed material compatibility testing, application guide checks, UL approval rating, and extensive life testing with R448A and R449A refrigerants.
These refrigerants have a lower global warming potential (GWP) and serve as substitutes for the potentially banned refrigerants: R-404A and R-507a, which are commonly used in supermarkets, condensing units, and commercial refrigeration equipment.
The EPA has announced plans to transition new applications away from refrigerants with a high global warming potential, such as R-404A and R-507A, as part of its Snap (Significant New Alternatives Policy). Snap works in conjunction with the president's Climate Action Plan to reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbons with high global warming potential. The rule as proposed would ban R-404A and R-507A in new applications such as retrofit by January 1, 2016.
"It is very important that our customers have tested, testing sustainable alternatives to refrigerants that have been selected for exclusion," said Mitch Knapke, director of food marketing at Emerson Climate Technologies. "To help our customers lessen the constraints and costs associated with a change of this magnitude, we have been working to develop products and equipment that not only meet this exclusion proposal, but also for the foreseeable future."
