Mexico. As a result of the ACR equipment replacement campaign that began on March 25, 2009, 2,100 kilograms of refrigerant gas and 7,000 liters of oil (from compressors) have been recovered to date. This initiative is part of the Integral Systematic Savings (ASI) program known as "Change your old for a new one", created by the federal government of Mexico.
The equipment recycling campaign has managed to remove from the market 25,000 refrigerators and 2,200 air conditioners, whose use time is more than 10 years.
The operational manager of the program, Jorge García Yll indicates that "the purpose is that people, by exchanging their old refrigerator for a new one, achieve energy savings, which will mean and translate into an economic saving of approximately 30% in their payment of the bimonthly electric service, and they will have a new refrigerator or an air conditioner".
García Yll commented that the program "leads to a satisfactory progress", since the goal by the end of this year is 1,900,000 actions throughout Mexico, of which there are already 1,500,000 devices replaced.
At the time of being destroyed, these devices are obtained four types of materials: plastic, copper, iron and aluminum, of which 95% are recycled in their entirety and the rest is sent to the municipal landfill.
