The Path to Certification

A few days ago I was talking to one of the figures of the refrigeration sector in Colombia and in one of the moments of the conversation he mentioned that while air conditioning enjoyed a complete international standardization, partly derived from the management of ASHRAE, in the refrigeration niche empiricism still prevailed.

Undoubtedly, what my interlocutor said makes sense, because when one does a little retrospective one finds that some of the most recognized standards of this American society are related more to AC than to refrigeration (see standards 55, 62.1, 62.2, 90.1 and 135, to name just a few examples).

This column is no criticism of any organization; rather, I seek to highlight that there is a great opportunity in terms of the development and publication of standards governing the application of refrigeration systems in certain environments.

However, for this the will of a part of the chain is not enough. Refrigeration technicians should be aware of the training, training and updating processes; thus the refrigeration courses that are organized would not look so deserted. But the end user also has his responsibility, for not requiring that his refrigeration contractors have some certification and demand it before the service, because this way we would begin to eradicate practices that threaten the environment and before generating savings in the productive chain increase costs at the time of maintenance.

Today, after six years working in this industry, I believe that Latin America is ready to start designing its own standardization system in refrigeration. Our countries, as large food producers, can begin to produce documents determining how certain products should be refrigerated/frozen in the presence of certain external conditions.
