The Andalusian Energy Agency and Red Eléctrica de España (REE) presented on Monday the study 'Renewable Energies: Andalusian landscape and territory', which analyses the potential of clean energy in Andalusia and concludes that the Community can sustain its energy system in indigenous resources, especially renewables.
The event, which took place at the Casa de la Provincia de Sevilla, was attended by the general director of the Andalusian Energy Agency, Francisco Bas; the southern regional delegate of Red Eléctrica de España, Miguel González; the vice president of the House of the Province, Carlos Márquez; and the economist and geographer Juan Requejo, representing the authors of the book.
The report highlights the possibility of building an energy system in Andalusia based on indigenous resources and with renewables as a fundamental pillar. In fact, the region's solar power generation potential is four million times higher than the annual electricity consumption of the entire national territory.
Currently, the Autonomous Community receives the equivalent of more than 159,000 terawatt hours (Twh) per year and wind energy is the most important in the field of renewables, since it accounts for 70 percent of the total installed capacity, with an annual growth of 49 percent. The region also holds the leadership in thermal generation, through the solar surface, biomass and geothermal technology.
The authors of the book point out that, despite the pioneering role of the region in the exploitation of renewable energies, there is a need to intensify efforts, since the gross production of electricity from renewable sources compared to the total gross production stands at 19 percent, below the national 25 percent, "while it is true that this percentage is affected by the significant contribution of combined cycle plants to total power generation."
In this project, endorsed by the Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Science, through the Andalusian Energy Agency, and by Red Eléctrica de España and directed by the Group of Advanced Studies on Territory and Environment 'Textura', professionals from different universities, institutions and companies of the Community have participated.
Throughout the publication, these experts analyze the cultural, landscape, environmental, urban and socioeconomic variables associated with the exploitation of renewable energies, while proposing measures to reduce negative impacts and multiply the beneficial effects.
The authors of the study try to encourage strategic investments, identifying activities with a great capacity to generate employment and harmonizing them with the implementation of clean energy. This culture of sustainability must be applied, as they indicate, to the traditional sectors of the Andalusian economy, such as tourism and agriculture.
In his speech, the general director of the Andalusian Energy Agency, Francisco José Bas, reviewed the Andalusian energy situation highlighting the importance of renewable sources in Andalusia and the use made of them with a view to reducing external energy dependence. He also referred to other positive values of the commitment to renewables such as the development of a competitive business fabric, creation of stable and quality employment, and capable of generating R + D + I in this area.
Finally, Bas mentioned in his speech the existence of pioneering projects in the community that have made it possible for 33 percent of the total electrical power of Andalusia to come from renewable energies.
EXHIBITION ON RENEWABLE INFRASTRUCTURES
After the presentation of the book, the inauguration of the photographic exhibition 'The landscape of renewables in Andalusia' took place, which includes a selection of panoramic photographs published in the work on traditional infrastructures and new renewable energy generating facilities throughout the Andalusian territory.
In recent years, the development of clean energies and the proliferation of infrastructures for their exploitation have modified the Andalusian landscape, integrating the traditional with the culture of sustainability. Through images of great artistic quality, its author offers a panoramic view of the new reality of the Andalusian region in terms of landscape and infrastructure. The exhibition will remain open in the Patio de la Casa de la Provincia until March 28. (EUROPA PRESS)
