Fomento de San Sebastián has led a delegation formed by about twenty companies and about ten entities and institutions that have traveled on a business mission to Austria, with the aim of knowing the Austrian strategy in the field of biomass, "one of the renewable energies with possibilities of expansion in San Sebastian and that can offer interesting business opportunities for local companies".
According to municipal sources, this business mission is part of the work of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Cluster, through which Fomento de San Sebastián aims to consolidate this sector as "one of the tractors of economic transformation, key in the future of the local economy".
In addition to Fomento de San Sebastián, as organizer, relevant companies in the sector, technological centers such as Tecnalia and other entities such as Diputación de Gipuzkoa, Kutxa or the Usurbil Institute of Renewable Energies participate in the mission.
Fomento explained that Austria is among the "leading countries in the field of renewable energies" with many research centers and companies dedicated to this sector and a clustering strategy similar to that of Fomento de San Sebastián. Likewise, in this country there is a large number of SMEs whose activity focuses on biomass and bioenergy.
The San Sebastian delegation visited the Fröling biomass boiler factory which, with around 600 employees, is one of the leaders in providing modern heating solutions in firewood, pellets and wood waste, as well as a manufacturer of boilers for biomass of the latest generation, exporting more than 70 percent of its products and services.
They have also approached the City Council of Linz to learn about their commitment to renewable energies and, already in Vienna, they have had the opportunity to visit District Heating, the largest biomass facility in Europe, in which 52 million euros were invested to be able to supply around 48,000 homes of electricity and 12,000 with central heating.
