Iberdrola Renovables has started the development of the West of Duddon Sans offshore wind farm project, with 389 megawatts (MW) of power and the first of its kind of the Spanish company in the United Kingdom, it announced in a statement.
The complex, which will be developed by the British subsidiary Scottish Power Renewables together with the Danish company Dong, will require an investment of 1,600 million pounds (1,825 million euros), financed 50% by each of the two companies.
The developers have already completed the design phase of the facility and are in a position to start construction work next year, with the aim of bringing the wind farm online in 2014.
Iberdrola Renovables is, with a project portfolio of 10,000 megawatts (MW), the world leader in the promotion of offshore wind installations. The new facility will be located 14 kilometers southwest of the coast of Barrow in Furness, in England.
The power of the West Of Duddon Sands park will be sufficient to meet the electricity consumption of 300,000 British homes, making it one of the largest offshore facilities in the world when it comes online.
The two companies have already completed the complete design of the project, which includes the selection of wind turbines and electrical connections, which will be formed by the submarine wiring and the transformer substation necessary to bring the energy to the national terrestrial grid.
For the construction of the park there will be two vessels, specially designed for this type of infrastructure and to perform their function in extreme weather conditions.
Much of the assembly will be carried out in the port of Belfast and operations will be carried out from the port of Barrow. The construction of this offshore facility will generate about 500 jobs, to which we will have to add in the future as many others necessary for operation and maintenance work. (EUROPA PRESS)
