Part 5 of Greenpeace's Guide to GMOs and Responsible Consumption, "And You Know What You Eat?"
This guide lets you know which foods contain GMOs and which foods are free of these organisms. The information, collected during the second half of 2010, was requested directly from more than 200 companies.
In the purple section of this guide are products and food brands that may contain at least one ingredient or additive produced from GM crops.
Some examples of ingredients and additives derived from these crops and therefore "suspected" of being transgenic are the following:
Soy: in the form of flour, protein, oils and fats (often "hidden" behind the concept of vegetable oils or fats), emulsifiers (lecithin-E322), mono
and diglycerides of fatty acids (E471) and fatty acids.
Corn: in the form of flour, starch, oil, semolina, glucose, glucose syrup, fructose, dextrose, maltodextrin, isomaltose, sorbitol (E420), caramel (E150).
Cotton: in the form of oil from seeds.
Canola: in the form of oil.
How to use the guide:
The green section includes products whose manufacturers provided Greenpeace with written evidence and tangible evidence that they do not use GMOs or their derivatives as ingredients.
The purple section includes those products whose manufacturers:
• have not responded to Greenpeace;
• do not provide guarantees that their products do not contain transgenic ingredients or their derivatives, or
• have not expressed a clear and unambiguous commitment that they do not use GMOs.
See the Image Gallery for GMO-free food brands and those that don't.
