The largest catamaran in Europe with electric propulsion, whose operation is based on the combination of various renewable energies, has been launched this Thursday in the port of Arenys de Mar (Barcelona).
The boat, baptized as Eco Slim and with a length of 24 meters and a width of 10.5, is capable of reaching eight knots of speed --equivalent to eight nautical miles per hour--, also thanks to a more efficient design that has allowed to reduce its weight by half.
The design, in which scientists from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) have participated, also reduces the hydrodynamic resistance by 20%, and has been built using the vacuum infusion system --with the subsequent assembly of the parts as it happens with the bodies of cars--, in what is the first time this system is used in Spain.
The launch ceremony of the vessel was attended by the Secretary of State for Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Juan Tomás Hernani --his portfolio has collaborated in the project through the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI)--; the mayor of Arenys de Mar, Ramon Vinyes; the dean of the Faculty of Nautical of the UPC, Santiago Ordás, and Glòria Dalmau, representing the construction shipyards, Drassanes Dalmau.
The catamaran works from the combination of energy generated by solar panels, wind turbines, hydrogen cells and thermal generators that combine diesel with electricity, which reduces the environmental impact on the air and marine environment, in addition to avoiding noise pollution.
The boat, with capacity for 150 seats and an autonomy of four hours, is propelled by two high-performance electric motors designed by the UPC that are associated with the different power supplies and that, in case of connecting to a ground, requires an hour and a half to recharge. (EUROPA PRESS)
