Iberdrola Renovables and the City Council of Puertollano (Ciudad Real) have formalized a collaboration agreement to create a local development program aimed at promoting educational actions for the promotion of renewable energies. Within this framework, talks and exhibitions will be held on the production, operation, use and promotion of this type of energy.
The signing of the agreement, which took place this Monday at the facilities of the Iberdrola Renovables solar thermal power plant in this town, was attended by the mayor of Puertollano, Joaquín Hermoso, and the territorial director of Iberdrola Renovables in the central-eastern area, Venancio Rubio, as reported by the company in a press release.
According to the agreement, Iberdrola Renovables will allow the use of a new center that has opened next to this plant to the consistory for the organization of talks, exhibitions and presentations around clean energy. To finance this project, which will last during 2011, each party will contribute 10,000 euros.
Iberdrola Renovables inaugurated a solar thermal power plant in Puertollano last year. This facility has a power of 50 megawatts (MW) and an estimated annual production of 100 million kilowatt hours (kWh), which is equivalent to the consumption of a population of 100,000 inhabitants and can avoid the emission of 90,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Currently, the company is developing an R&D project at this site that involves the construction of a new direct steam generation plant. Thanks to this initiative, which aims to replace the oil currently used with water, not only would the initial investment required be reduced by up to 20%, but the overall performance of the installation would also be increased.
With the formalization of this agreement, the energy company ratifies its commitment to Puertollano where, in addition to developing renewable energy projects, it participates in educational and social programs, among which the Sports Championship for People with Disabilities that has been held in this town during the last four years stands out.
