The governor of Quintana Roo, Mexico, Félix González Canto announced last week that the municipality of Othón Blanco will replace 25,507 street lamps with energy-efficient versions of LEDs. The announcement, which was made in conjunction with GE (all spotlights used will be GE Evolve LED), will mark the largest LED street light project in Latin America.
The initiative is part of the Mexican government's 2010-2012 program, which aims to reduce municipalities' consumption by 29.218.98 billion watts per year, which is equivalent to removing 40,000 cars for 10 years. This change will save the municipality 51% of the energy they use.
It is not known how much money the project will cost, but we are sure that in the long run the municipality will save money.
