Mexico City will become the first city in Latin America to receive the Nissan LEAF as part of the Mexico City government's Green Plan, which committed to reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles by promoting electric vehicles.
The memorandum of understanding, signed by authorities and Nissan, brings together representatives from each organization to identify opportunities to promote the use of zero-emission vehicles in Mexico City.
"Today is a historic day for the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Mexico City," said Carlos Tavares, President of Nissan Americas. "We are signing a Memorandum of Understanding in order to introduce electric vehicles in the capital of Mexico. Leadership in zero emissions is a fundamental commitment for the Renault-Nissan Alliance. We are delighted to share a common vision for a cleaner world with Mr. Ebrard's administration. "
"Bringing electric vehicles to the Mexico City market is a natural progression of Nissan's direction and Mexico's heritage," said Jose Munoz, president of Nissan Mexicana. "Working with important partners like Mexico City is a critical step in our ongoing and enduring commitment to Mexican society."
Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the Renault-Nissan Alliance is leading a collaborative strategy with businesses and governments and has signed more than 30 agreements worldwide with other partners to launch its first electric vehicle from 2010 and for the mass market a full range of electric vehicles by 2012. Today, with this initiative, Mexico City joins this approach.
The Nissan LEAF is the first vehicle to be launched under this agreement. It provides a pleasant experience, efficient driving with a range of about 160 Km (100 miles). It is five-door, five-passenger hatchback has an electric motor and the car runs on batteries (all-electric vehicle) without any polluting emissions. No internal combustion engine or petroleum-based fossil fuels are needed. Its electric motor delivers 80 kW of power (107 hp) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of direct torque to its wheels, providing rapid response and powerful acceleration.
