It is possible that in the near future we will be able to convert the windows of our houses into solar panels.
Oxford Fotovoltaics has developed solar cells that can be printed directly onto glass to turn windows into power generation panels. The Oxford University group has won more than $150,000 in a UK technology competition, which will help it commercialize its latest invention.
Dubbed "organic," these color-sensitive solar cells mimic photosynthesis using a dye that releases an electron from a current. Screen printing technology is used to place these solar cells directly on windows.
The group intends to collaborate with other manufacturers and accelerate the prototyping process in the next six months. Oxford PV wants these new solar cells to be as durable as possible, so that they last at least 20 years.
