New electricity tariff: the energy market is liberalized

Tomorrow, 1 July, the new electricity tariff comes into force or, in other words, the liberalisation of the energy sector is completed. From next semester, the vast majority of electricity consumers, about 20 million users with a contracted power of less than 10 kW, will automatically benefit from the so-called Last Resort Tariff.

This tariff, calculated by the Ministry of Industry, will mean an increase of 2% in the electricity bill. Translating into the language of the pocket, 7 cents more each month, to which we must add the discount of 12.5 kW per month that has been applied to each user during the last year and that disappears with this new regulatory regulation.

The liberalization of the market means that from now on it will be the marketing companies in charge of managing our receipts. On the one hand, the user gains freedom when hiring the energy marketing company and negotiating personalized rates, but on the other, it seems that they leave us now in the hands of the large companies that with their encrypted language of percentages and kilowatts are able to confuse the smartest of users.

This is precisely what consumer associations complain about. According to the OCU, marketers offer unclear information about prices and many of their offers involve hiring additional services.

If they have not chosen to change companies for the time being, the marketer of the group that supplies them with the energy will take care of their bill, which will be calculated under the Last Resort Tariff.
It seems that at the moment the offers that these companies have launched are not too attractive and barely mean saving a few euros, so the general recommendation is to wait a while until the market is activated.  Then get ready to pick up the calculator and analyze each proposal.

OCU Recommendation: Check how the rate is updated, how long the discount lasts, and what penalty there is if you want to leave before the contract ends.
