Nicaragua. According to the conclusions reached during the forum "Analyzing the Potential of Renewable Energy", organized by the Embassy of the United States in Nicaragua, this Central American country has great potential to develop solar, geothermal and wind energy generation projects.
This is important because Nicaragua continues to be highly dependent on the combustion of firewood and fossil fuels to meet its energy needs. According to Iván Cortés, director of Renewable Resources of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, MEM. The official highlighted the efforts being made to reduce this dependence and have cleaner energy sources. He also explained that in the next five years the situation will change with the implementation of renewable water and geothermal projects. "The advantage we will have in the medium term future, with the change of the energy matrix, is that we will generate clean energy, we will no longer depend on hydrocarbons, therefore there will be economic savings and we will be a country that generates less pollution," said Cortés. Among the projects mentioned by the official are the San Jacinto-Tizate geothermal and the Tumarín hydroelectric plant, which combined will produce up to 322 megawatts of energy to cover 60% of the country's demand. In addition to the above, Susan Kinne, director of the Alternative Sources of Solar Energy program at the National University of Engineering, UNI, pointed out that the country also has great potential for the use of solar energy. "Solar energy can be exploited in every part of the country, and that makes it more accessible. That is why the Government must promote this resource more, because it is easy to develop it in remote areas, where access is limited, with smaller investments, "he said.
