Mexico. A solar air conditioning system, designed to take advantage of the weather conditions of solar radiation, temperature and humidity present in most of Mexico, is developed by scientists from the Center for Energy Research -CIE- of the National Autonomous University of Mexico -UNAM-.This device has important innovations in the patent process, among them, that for its operation the "cooling towers" are not necessary, where water circulates at a high humidity favoring the development of bacteria, since this system is cooled only by air and also provides a solution to the growing costs of electricity.
Solar air conditioning has two subsystems: the solar collector field and the cooling machine. The latter works by a principle called absorption, where the compressor, which is the largest consumer of energy is replaced by two components: an absorber and a generator, which operates exclusively with heat produced by the Sun.
The researchers claim that the system would have at least a service life of 15 years, with an additional advantage: because it has no moving parts, it requires virtually no maintenance. "All that is needed is to keep the collector field clean to better capture solar radiation," said Wilfrido Rivera, head of CIE's Energy Systems Department.
