Brazil. The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, opted for biofuels as a solution to combat climate change, as well as an economic opportunity for developing countries, which will help avoid the increase of inequalities in the world.
Lula said that the growth of economic sectors such as biofuels have contributed to reducing poverty in his country, while preserving the environment.
"We will not be able to overcome the terrible impact of climate change until humanity changes the patterns of energy production and consumption," he said.
He added that "the world urgently needs the development of a new energy matrix, in which biofuels will play a vital role."
In order to foster international cooperation in favor of the environment, Lula convened a new international summit on Earth in Rio de Janeiro for 2012.
