Chile. The Ministry of the Environment reported that it carried out the launch of the Kigali Implementation Plan (KIP) that will allow the country to meet the goals of the Montreal Protocol.
The ceremony was led by the Undersecretary of the Environment, Maximiliano Proaño; the representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Paloma Toranzos and Carlos Andrés Hernández; the representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Marco Pinzón; and the head of the Department of Illicit Traffic Control of the National Customs Service.
Among those who participated were also representatives of the Chilean Chamber of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, as well as leaders of several organizations from the private and educational sectors.
Agustín Sánchez, international expert of the UNDP, referred to the details, times and resources of the Plan, which will be in implementation until 2029, and whose final objective is to meet the goal of reducing Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases that are mainly found in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
For his part, the Undersecretary of the Environment, Maximiliano Proaño, stressed that these efforts not only benefit the environment, but also promote technological innovation and job creation in sectors such as refrigeration and air conditioning, promoting more sustainable and resilient development.
Proaño also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as with educational centers, to guarantee an effective transition to cleaner and more efficient technologies.
Finally, he pointed out that "with the Kigali Amendment, I am confident that we will be able to demonstrate the ability of the countries of the world to come together and take collective action in the face of complex environmental challenges. The planet is the common home of all and with this international cooperation we will not only strengthen our climate actions, but also send a clear message: when we work together, we can achieve meaningful change."
