Chile. At the Holiday Inn hotel in Santiago, located at the Arturo Merino Benítez airport, a retrofit project was carried out for the diesel thermal power plant for a hotel that has 226 rooms and an area of 8,960 m2 air-conditioned. This project was executed by the company Energy Tracking.
In this building there is a thermal power plant for domestic hot water (DHW) and heating (ACC), consisting of two firetube boilers of 450 kW each, both operating with Diesel. The DHW circuit was composed of two accumulation tanks for DHW of 4,000 liters each, with external plate exchanger.
Hermes Silva, CEO of the company, explained that the implementation consisted of improving the existing exchangers to transform it into a double (CTR®). Heat Guard® system is installed to control the thermal power plant and two 130 kwt aerothermal heat pumps are installed, each reusing the DHW accumulator tanks to convert them into inertial ponds and VDF are installed in recirculating pumps. The investment of the project was USD 117,400.
This project was implemented in May 2022 and the results to date are accumulated savings of 679,894 kWh (in 9 months, from October 2022, with 100% of the project operating), which is equivalent to 62,895 liters of Diesel or US $ 60,000 with the operation of heat pumps, this is a saving of 56% on the energy baseline.
The heat pumps started operation in September 2022 and savings of 34.1% were obtained in Diesel consumption (without heat pumps). The simple Payback is 1.72 years (projected to 12 months) and the CO2 Reduction is 272 Ton in 9 months.
Saludos cordiales,
