International. Maersk has launched a solution that helps to better manage the cold chain in food transport. It is Captain Peter Integrated, a virtual refrigeration assistant that allows data integration through an API.
According to the latest report of "Global Food Loss and Food Waste" 1/3 of transported food is lost due to poor management of the refrigerated chain. This means that transporting perishables globally is a challenging task, especially when it comes to cargo such as fruit, meat, and medicines, which are sensitive to fluctuating transit conditions.
That is why the logistics integrator AP Moller - Maersk, has sought a way to use new technologies and logistics services, "expanding the network of cold rooms and technological platforms, since 25% of the food and medicines that move in the world are transported by the group, that is, 1 out of every 4 refrigerated containers is transported by Maersk”.
Even, this company also manages 29% of the protein and dairy market, which moves around 36 million tons per year. The same occurs with the area of fruits and vegetables, bananas and pineapples, where of the 75 million tons that are handled per year, Maersk accounts for 25% of the market.
That is why in December 2019 it launched Captain Peter virtual refrigeration assistant, which gave its clients visibility into the conditions inside reefer containers.
But now the brand is launching the new Captain Peter Integrated package, which enables data integration with Application Programming Interface (API) for customers to get raw data logs with temperature readings on their own system of choice. It could be your own transportation management system or a third-party platform.
Additionally, the customer can now grant their shippers and recipients access to log in and view shipment details directly in Captain Peter.
“The launch of Captain Peter Integrated is an important step on the path to more integrated and digitally enabled supply chains. Visibility and flexibility are crucial for our clients and their stakeholders, and by allowing data to flow directly from our assets to the client's system, we are building a closer partnership and ultimately enabling better decisions for their supply chains. supply,” says Bruce Marshall, Director of Refrigerated Solutions at AP Moller-Maersk.
For more than three years, Captain Peter has been helping Maersk customers manage their perishables by providing information on the temperature and humidity in refrigerated containers in transit. The novelty is that customers can now choose between three different versions of the program according to their needs.
“We are constantly evolving our product portfolio based on customer feedback, and demand for more agile digital tools and plugins has increased dramatically since the pandemic,” explains Bruce Marshall.
Parallel to digital development, Maersk's remote container management infrastructure is constantly being improved. Through 2022 more than 80% of the refrigerated fleet has been upgraded to provide Captain Peter with hourly data, compared to a previous daily update, enabling even greater visibility and reducing the risk of damaged goods and waste. food.
By the end of 2023, 90% of Maersk's reefer fleet will support hourly data log transmission. The group also intends to open around 125 cold rooms and new packing plants to process fruit in strategic locations.
