International. Eng. Ernesto Porras, Specialist Consultant in Air Conditioning of the company Consultoría y Diseño en Climatización S.A.S, shared a series of recommendations for the correct design of an efficient ice water plant.
Eng. Porras states that "the correct design of an ice water plant is of vital importance if you want to have more sustainable and energy-efficient systems and buildings".
Here are the 7 steps that must be taken into account to design an efficient ice water plant:
1. Select the configuration of the plant's ice water distribution system (primary-variable flow, variable primary-secondary flow, etc.)
2. Select system ice water temperatures, ice water flow and plant main pipe sizes.
3. Select the type of cooling tower speed control, energy efficiency, cooling range and wet bulb approach temperatures, and preliminary selection of the cooling tower.
4. Select the water cooler using performance data and life cycle analysis.
5. Adjust the size of the cooling tower and the number of modules or cells if necessary.
6. Finalize the piping system design and select the pumps.
7. Develop and optimize plant control sequences.
