United States. In early March 2017, a report released by Brad Lander, a member of the New York City Council, showed that one in four salons in New York is unincorporated. This represents nearly 11,000 air-conditioned classrooms in more than 1,000 public schools.
Students and teachers also reported that temperatures in unrefrigerated classrooms could reach nearly 38°C, which would disturb students' concentration. In light of these findings, a campaign was launched to improve learning conditions. In late April, the city officially announced a $28.75 million initiative to install air conditioners in every classroom in New York City over the next five years.
In addition to funding for air conditioning units and installation, the School Construction Authority's five-year Capital Plan includes approximately $50 million for electrical upgrades needed to power the units.
The Department of Education will work with the Construction Authority to determine which buildings get the new CAs first, starting with those offering classes in the summer.
"I've talked to countless parents in city councils and this issue has come up several times," Mayor de Blasio said. "We are investing in classrooms to create a safe and comfortable atmosphere to build on the progress our schools have made in recent years."
