Cuba. The first plant in Latin America with the purpose of destroying harmful substances that damage the ozone layer will soon be operational in Cuba, announced Salvador Damas, deputy technical director of the Siguaney factory.
The project will be carried out at the cement factory in the central province of Sancti Spiritus and is part of a strategy developed by Cuba and the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Cuba will have the fifth plant in the world for the incineration of harmful gases, as confirmed by Elier Rodríguez, a specialist in the project.
The goal of the plant is to destroy chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) also known as freon, in order to secure the ecosystem of the region and prevent harmful emissions from reaching the atmosphere. Cuba will contain the CFCs in the refrigeration and air conditioning systems to remove the compound. Rodriguez confirmed that the government will maintain strict security measures for incineration that will reach temperatures of more than 1,200 degrees Celsius.
According to the Ozone Technical Office, under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), Cuba has more than 130 tons of Freón 12 and 22 in storage.
