Colombia. On the Caribbean Coast, in the north of the country, energy consumption registered an increase of 7.9% in the first four months of the year, compared to the same period in 2012.
The company Electricaribe reported that this increase is mainly due to the high temperatures that are occurring there, which forces to increase the use of air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration equipment.
According to the newspaper El Heraldo, this increase means an additional energy demand of 305 gigawatt hours (GWh) for Electricaribe. Temperatures are averaging 30°C with a maximum of 37°C.
If the weather continues in this way, the power utility expects a 6% increase in demand, for about 366 gigawatts in addition to the energy demand that was reported in 2012.
