Pope Benedict XVI will be riding his new zero-emission green popemobile . Mercedes-Benz has designed and manufactured this hybrid popemobile with electric-gasoline motor that is based on the Mercedes M-Class (4 wheels). The vehicle has a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged and will have the driving capacity of 16 miles or 30 kilometers without any emissions. However, the Popemobile will not be purely electric for safety considerations in cases of emergency and, therefore, the engine will be hybridized and will also run on gasoline if necessary. Mercedes-Benz has not released the details of this hybrid car for confidentiality reasons, but it is suggested that the new green popemobile should be ready by the time the pope visits his native Germany in September this year.
Mercedes has manufactured these special vehicles for popes since the 80s with special features such as high-rise reinforced glass that allows the view of the Pope with high security. There had been no talks underway since last December with some statements from Vatican City suggesting that the pope is willing to use an electric popemobile – because of environmental concerns.
Pope Benedict XVI is a very strong propagator of environmental protection and has made significant efforts to transform Vatican City into a greener, greener state. He has emphasized humanity's contribution to maintaining and preserving the environment for generations to come. The 'Green' is evidently a part of his speeches and teachings, as well as his policies. The Pope has further strengthened his determination to motivate humanity for a better world with the announcement of seven new sins that demand repentance and the fourth on the list is "pollution of the environment." Therefore, the new green popemobile is part of the Pope's crusade for sustainable living and land conservation.
