The Environment Committee of the Senate will debate this Monday, March 21, a motion presented by the senator of the Popular Party for the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, Loly Luzardo, where the Government is urged to, together with the Executive of the Canary Islands, the Island Council and the City Council of Teguise, support a pioneering sustainable project on the island of La Graciosa.
In a statement the PP explained that the proposal aims to ensure that the island, with a population of around 700 inhabitants, is one hundred percent sustainable in energy and that it can be fully self-sufficient with renewable energies, such as wind or solar.
Luzardo understood that the natural wealth of La Graciosa added to the demographic and economic characteristics, "make it feasible to be a completely sustainable island, from the energy point of view, through clean energies".
"Like all the Canary Islands, La Graciosa benefits from the trade winds and the sun, practically all year round, which would facilitate the possible use of wind, solar thermal or photovoltaic energy," said the senator, for whom a project of these characteristics would be "a magnificent opportunity for the island both from the environmental point of view, as economic and tourist".
On the other hand, Luzardo has highlighted the work being done by the island of El Hierro, a pioneer in this type of initiative, and that in his case is working on a hydroeolic system, capable of covering the entire electricity demand of the island.
Finally, the senator believes that La Graciosa has sufficient attractions and assets to address a sustainable self-sufficiency project and believes that it is essential that the possibilities that the island has in this matter be studied. (EUROPA PRESS)
