German Chancellor Angela Merkel advocates overcoming nuclear technology, which remains a "transient source of energy," and "reaching the era of renewable energy as soon as possible."
Merkel reversed her popular decision last autumn to extend the life of older nuclear power plants and announced on Tuesday the temporary closure of the seven plants built before 1980, in the context of the nuclear crisis in Japan caused by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. The opposition has accused her of electoralism.
During a session before Parliament, Merkel said thursday that nuclear technology remains a transient source of electricity and that the future belongs to renewable energy.
"We will use the deliberately short and ambitious moratorium period to carry out the changes in energy policy and accelerate them as much as possible, as we want to reach the age of renewable energy as soon as possible," he said. (EUROPA PRESS)
