The works for the expansion of the Cañoneras wind farm, commissioned in Soba by Iberdrola Renovables, have ended with the start of operation of the 17 new wind turbines, which will avoid the emission into the atmosphere of 64,000 tons of C02 per year and will have effects equivalent to what would purify 3.2 million trees.
The Cañoneras wind farm is the only wind farm in Cantabria at present, and after the expansion it has gone from generating 17.8 to 32 megawatts (MW), which allows it to supply energy to 80,000 people. 17 million euros have been invested in this project.
Iberdrola Renovables and the Cantabrian company Ocyener have recently been awarded, through the company Biocantaber, the construction of five new wind farms in Cantabria, totaling a capacity of 205 MW.
These parks will be called La Cruz del Marqués, El Escuchadero, Peñas Gordas, La Matanela and Las Matas.
The industrial plan associated with this wind project, valued at 30 million euros, aims at the technological development of the region through clean energy.
The project includes the construction of an R&D laboratory and up to eight biogas plants for the treatment of livestock slurry and organic waste.
GUNSHIPS
The Cañoneras wind farm, launched in 2007, is the only wind farm in Cantabria and is located at the summit of Puerto de los Tornos, in the municipality of Soba, between the neighborhood councils of Fresnedo, Rehoyos, Pilas, Sangas, La Revilla, Villar and Santayana.
All the technology of this facility, including its expansion, is from the company Gamesa and all the wind turbines of this second phase have left the factory of this company in the town of Reinosa.
In addition, Iberdrola Renovables, within its corporate social responsibility policy, plans to carry out an educational program focused on the knowledge of renewable energies, making visits to the Cañoneras wind farm with schools and associations in the environment.
To carry out this expansion, the company and its partners in Cantabria have developed the Cañoneras I+D project, which has created a new model of wind turbine specially designed to take full advantage of the characteristics of this site.
The studies prior to the expansion of the wind farm determined that the new wind turbines were to be installed in areas where the wind conditions are much higher than those supported by Gamesa's conventional wind turbines.
These are heights of 1,270 meters, the highest in the entire area, where the inclement weather is extreme.
In this way, the result of Cañoneras I+D has been a new type of wind turbine capable of withstanding these wind loads and the adverse conditions of this wind farm, as well as adapting to its special environmental characteristics.
This R&D initiative has also included an exhaustive environmental study that has aimed to find the ideal location of the park. To this end, an archaeological survey and a detailed study of the elements of natural and cultural interest have been carried out.
The development of this project has required the hiring of about 60 people who have been dedicated to the design, construction, civil works and assembly of the installation. (EUROPA PRESS)
