The small Vatican city is now by far the greenest state in the world after the giant installation of solar energy panels.
"The Vatican has reached a record in solar energy production per capita: 200 watts at peak times... per capita, compared to 80 in Germany, the world leader in this field," said the Osservatore Romano.
Vatican City is the least populous sovereign state in the world, with a population of only around 800 people.
Italy produces only four watts per inhabitant of solar energy.
L'Osservatore Romano said the panels installed in the Paul VI conference room two years ago have saved the Vatican 89.84 tons of oil equivalent.
Pope Benedict XVI has been called the "Green Pope" by the Italian media for his strong emphasis on defending the environment.
Earlier this month Vatican officials said they were thinking of using an electric-powered vehicle to replace the classic popemobile.
