The Home Depot and Habitat for Humanity have formed an initiative called Companions in Sustainable Construction, and are on track to complete their goal of 5,000 green homes. They have built 1,500 sustainable homes already, and next year, another 2,400 will be built. 135 Habitat for Humanity affiliates in 42 U.S. states have signed on to be part of the program, receiving $8,000 from the Home Depot Foundation for each home to ensure the homes are built to EnergyStar standards and conform to rigorous sustainable building standards.
Habitat for Humanity has been building affordable housing for families in need since 1976 and they have built an impressive 350,000 homes in 3,000 municipalities, and also some large green residences on their own, such as New York's LEED CertifiedAtlantic Avenue project. While Habitat for Humanity continues to build affordable housing, the Home Depot Foundation has committed $400 million over more than 10 years to build 100,000 homes and plant 3 million trees in the U.S.
