Colombia. A study of risks due to Climate Change in municipalities of the country was recently delivered by the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies -Ideam and the United Nations Development Program, Undp.
The study is called "Analysis of vulnerability and risk due to Climate Change for the municipalities of Colombia", and was prepared by a group of 40 professionals and worked for three years.
The methodology that was used is innovative and consistent with the most recent guidelines, which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) dictates, and also ensures that the country continues to evaluate in a standardized manner, its progress in reducing vulnerability and risk due to Climate Change (Future National Communications).
Among the main results of the study, it is shown that 100% of the municipalities of Colombia have some degree of risk due to Climate Change, in addition, the study concludes that the Department with the highest Risk due to the phenomenon by 2040 is San Andrés and Providencia, followed by Vaupés and Amazonas; Bogotá, for example, stands out as the second Capital with the highest Risk due to Climate Change.
The study will also facilitate correct decision-making to guide adaptation to the problem, since it is based on the detailed analysis of the department or municipality, using the matrices of indicators and not only the maps of averages, as a fundamental input for the formulation of Modern POT and the updating of municipal planning plans.
Together with the other products of the National Communication, IDEAM contributes to the construction of the new post-conflict Colombia, a country with less risk due to Climate Change.
