United States. FedEx Express (FedEx) announced the opening of its new Cold Chain Center, with which they seek to maintain a specific temperature range throughout the shipping process that is essential to maintain the quality of many medical devices. The new service is part of the company's global chain focused on its offer of health services solutions.
The Cold Chain Center will be located at FedEx Express' global headquarters in Menphis, Tennessee, United States, and will offer services for the Latin American and U.S. markets, among others.
According to data from the 2015 Markets Report, Cold Chain, International Trade Administration, it states that each year 130 billion dollars of sales in the health industry depend on the cold chain to ensure that life-saving products remain intact and are available around the world.
Market figures indicate that healthcare in Latin America has an expectation of growth two to three times faster than in the United States and Europe for 2018, according to data from the report Key Challenges in the Cold Chain in Latin America, ColdChainIQ, April 2015.
Richard W. Smith, Vice President of Global Trade Services at FedEx Express, said that this new service "allows the transfer of the most sensitive products, such as biological drugs between continents, which was not possible a few years ago."
The Cold Chain Center offers the following types of packaging: C-Safe compressor containers
(+4°C to +25°C), Ecological Containers/Dry Ice Containers (-20°C to +25°C), FedEx Thermal Blankets, Liquid Nitrogen Dewar (-150°C), FedEx UN 3373 Pak and FedEx Clinical Pak.
FedEx also reported that it can offer temperature-controlled storage as a contingency measure.
