Brazil. The U.S. Green Building Council reported that some of the host stadiums of the last World Cup achieved LEED Certification, including the historic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to the Maracanã, the list is completed by the stadiums of Castelao Arena in Fortaleza (LEED Certified), the Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador, the Amazon Arena in Manaus and the Multipurpose Arena in Recife (LEED Plata).
The Maracanã received recognition for its outstanding construction in aspects such as visibility, accessibility, security and hospitality for its visitors.
The Castelao Arena has a roof that optimizes thermal comfort and adequate ventilation and also collects rainwater that is used in bathrooms and green areas. It also managed to reduce the use of drinking water by 68% and has a modern automation system that managed to reduce energy use by 13%.
The Fonte Nova Arena, on the other hand, has 20% of its infrastructure made with recycled materials, in addition, 355% of the energy it uses comes from its own generation through renewable sources such as wind and solar.
