International. FabricAir announced the acquisition of Borealis Wind, a specialist in blade heating systems for new and existing wind turbines that prevent and eliminate ice buildup.
This announcement follows the opening of FabricAir Canada, Inc. in Waterloo, Ontario, in May 2023.
Icing on wind turbine blades is a major problem that is often overlooked. In countries with cold climates, this leads to large operating losses for wind turbine owners, unstable security of supply and huge risks to people and property in the immediate vicinity of an ice-covered wind turbine.
Borealis Wind was established in 2016 to solve this problem. Its patented solution equips wind turbines with an internal ice protection system that uses fabric ducts to prevent and eliminate ice buildup. The lightweight solution enables cold-weather wind farms to avoid costly downtime and damage, improving the efficiency and safety of wind turbines and providing a stable power supply during the winter months.
Borealis Wind founder Daniela Roeper, P.Eng., will become a member of FabricAir's global management team and vice president of the BorealisWind product line. "We have been fortunate to work with FabricAir since we started with Borealis Wind and are excited about our future together. Their commitment to innovation, quality and customer experience aligns with Borealis Wind's values," said Roeper.
"We are pleased to expand our product offering to our global customers with the Borealis ice protection system," said FabricAir CEO Brian Refsgaard. "This talented team of engineers, combined with this innovative solution, expands our ability to deliver innovative solutions for a wide range of industries."
FabricAir Canada was the 16th location opened by the company.
