Chile. The production of the first green hydrogen molecule in Chile was recently announced by the nation's president, Sebastián Piñera.
As reported, the hydrogen that began operating on August 23 will generate green hydrogen from water and electricity that will produce a photovoltaic plant located in the commune of Colina. The water will go through a demineralization process, the discharge of which will be used to power the electrolyzer. There the electrolysis of water will be carried out, giving hydrogen as the main product and oxygen as a by-product, which will be returned to the atmosphere.
The government's goal is to develop an industry that exports more than $30 billion a year, a level close to current copper exports. For the authorities, green hydrogen (H2V) presents a series of benefits, as a clean and sustainable energy vector in mining.
"This is a clean, transportable, competitive and sustainable fuel, which will allow us a great reduction in CO2 emissions," said the president.
Green hydrogen is produced from water and renewable energy. Obtaining by electrolysis from renewable sources consists of the decomposition of water molecules (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2).
Historically, hydrogen has been obtained using fossil fuels. This separation can also be done with electric power or natural gas, but the most environmentally friendly formula is to produce it with solar and wind energy.
Green hydrogen is used in fossil fuel refining, ammonia production, and the steel industry. New applications are currently being developed, in which hydrogen is burned directly or generates electricity through devices called fuel cells with the combination of hydrogen and oxygen from the air.
This new pole of progress for Chile will imply, according to estimates, the creation of some 100,000 jobs and US$200 billion in investment over the next 20 years.
