Mexico. The U.S. Sustainable Building Council (USGBC) announced the winners of the 2019 Greenbuild Leadership Awards in Mexico. Ternium Mexico and Alicia Silva Villanueva were honored at the second Greenbuild Mexico conference in Mexico City last June in Mexico City.
"Mexico has long been a global leader in green building and, in recent years, the market has shown tremendous growth," said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of USGBC and GBCI. "This is thanks to the leadership of companies like Ternium Mexico and people like Alicia Silva Villanueva, who are stepping forward and answering the call and working to create healthier and more sustainable buildings and communities across the country. The USGBC is honored to recognize these outstanding leaders as advocates for the green building community."
This year's award winners have made significant strides, supporting the advancement of healthy, sustainable and resource-efficient buildings in Mexico:
Ternium Mexico, which manufactures and processes a wide range of steel products, is committed to obtaining LEED certification for all its projects. Ternium's Environmental and Energy Policy 2018 formally integrates energy efficiency concepts and sets out the principles for the implementation of energy efficiency management systems for all the company's production units.
Alicia Silva Villanueva has spent more than 18 years in the fields of sustainable design and green building. His consultancy, Revitaliza Consultores, includes a broad portfolio with more than 35 LEED Platinum or Gold projects in Mexico, as well as LEED projects throughout Spain, Colombia and Peru. He has served on the LEED International Roundtable, the USGBC Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Committee, the USGBC Education Committee, the Supply Chain Manufacturing Group, and the LEED Steering Committee. He has also personally trained hundreds of people to earn their LEED credential and to advance sustainability in Mexico and the Latin American region.
Green building activity in Mexico has been growing steadily. The country has more than 1,075 projects participating in LEED, representing more than 31 million gross square meters of space. Mexico also made the USGBC list of the top 10 countries and regions for LEED for the second time.
