International. Coinciding with World Recycling Day, which was celebrated on May 17, Agremia (Association of Companies in the Facilities and Energy Sector) in Spain, has highlighted the opportunity for citizens to recycle air conditioning equipment that is renewed annually with the beginning of the summer season.
According to the installers, who have signed an agreement with Ecotic, the foundation in charge of financing and managing WEEE, "to absorb the amount of CO₂ that a single poorly managed air conditioner can emit into the atmosphere, 200 trees are needed working for a whole year, or what is the same, remove about 250 cars from circulation for a whole day."
"In this sense," they recall in Agremia, "distributors and appliance stores are obliged, for example, to accept the air conditioning unit that the buyer gives them when he is going to acquire a new equipment with similar characteristics." It is also possible, in those surfaces of more than 400 square meters, to deliver electrical and electronic equipment of less than 25 centimeters without the need to acquire another.
During 2018, nearly 270,000 tons of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) were managed in Spain for subsequent recycling. According to data from the United Nations University, consumption habits have led to the recycling of this type of waste growing at a rate three times higher than that of other municipal solid waste (glass, plastic or cardboard).
Given the enormous environmental and economic potential that the electronic recycling sector has in our country, Agremia appeals to go to the more than 52,000 clean collection points that exist and that do not involve any cost for individuals.
