International. The first World Refrigeration Day, to be celebrated on 26 June, has just received support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
According to its idealizers, World Refrigeration Day will be launched to raise the awareness of the international community about the role of that industry in supporting modern life and society.
Business and professional associations based in the United States, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Africa, the Middle East and across Europe have already given formal support to date.
"This commemoration will bring together the global community to celebrate the success and achievements of the sector through a series of international events and a social media campaign," says the UK's Refrigeration Institute (IOR).
The United Nations (UN) environmental agency reported that its 147 national units of the OzonAction division will promote seminars, workshops, trainings and competitions for professionals in the sector and end users of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
"The refrigeration industry is often described as a hidden industry. Now, we have a day to raise awareness of the truly incredible work we do globally," said British consultant Steve Gill, the main idealizer of the event, during a meeting promoted in February by UNEP.
"Refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technologies and applications emerged from the human need for food, comfort and thermal processes. "This is a story that goes back centuries, but for those who work in that industry, it's still a long-standing frustration not to receive due recognition," he argued.
