Mexico. According to the World Health Organization, 4 out of 10 people live affected by water scarcity. For this reason, companies such as Embraco have contributed to the environment since their inception through a wastewater treatment system.
"Since the beginning of Embraco it has been a priority to contribute to the environment and one of our ways to do this is through the reuse of water," says Edson Villegas, Supervisor of the Wastewater Treatment Plant at Embraco. "We are very aware of the problem generated by water scarcity so we continuously optimize our processes to reuse it."
According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI) of the 2,457 municipalities in the country, 66% do not have the water treatment service.
Embraco treats daily between 100 thousand and 120 thousand liters of water per day and the percentage that is recycled in the plant is 60%.
They have three types of processes for water treatment:
1.Primary process: Where chemicals are added for water treatment.
2.Secondary process: Through bacteria which consume the contaminants reducing the parameters of water pollution.
3.Tertiary process: Sand filters with activated carbon are used. Within this process, reverse osmosis equipment is used, which is responsible for removing dissolved salts and other very fine contaminants that cannot be eliminated with the previous processes.
The physical-chemical part takes 4 hours, the biological part is 16 hours (from the time the water enters the reactor until it is clarified) and from then on it is the tertiary process, which is almost instantaneous. For two decades, World Water Day has been celebrated every March 22 in order to raise awareness about the importance of water resources and promote their sustainable management.
"The percentage of water expenditure saved by recycling in Embraco is approximately 4,000 and 4,500 m3 per month," concludes Edson Villegas.
