International. The APCO air treatment system, manufactured by Fresh-Aire UV, has received an Environmental Validation according to UL 2998, an environmental validation procedure from UL Environment that confirms that the indoor air purification product by ultraviolet/photocatalytic (UV/PCO) emits zero ozone.
UL 2998 is a new validation procedure designed to determine if equipment emits zero ozone during its intended use, and can help wholesalers, HVAC contractors, and consumers identify products that meet their criteria.
The APCO air treatment system is listed in UL SPOT (ul.com/spot), UL's sustainable product database, which is open to the public. APCO was tested to UL 867 standards and revised under the UL 2998 validation procedure. Products classified as zero ozone emission must demonstrate that they emit less than the maximum ozone concentration limit of 0.005 ppm (5 ppb), 10 times less than allowed under UL867, which allows concentrations of 0.05 ppm (50 ppb).
Over the past 20 years, countless stand-alone, HVAC-mounted air cleaning products have appeared on the market. Many of these systems have been found to emit ozone or ozone reaction products in occupied spaces. Consequently, several health standards and organizations, such as the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have expressed concern about the dangers associated with ozone-emitting air cleaners.
"Consumer safety is our number one priority," said Chris Willette, president of Fresh-Aire UV. "Validating our product for UL 2998 allows HVAC professionals to promote our APCO technology knowing it is safe, effective and now validated for having zero ozone emissions."
