Costa Rica. The production of electricity in Costa Rica through renewable sources reached 96.36% of total generation in the first half of the year, the national government reported.
According to preliminary data from the National Energy Control Center of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), clean sources dominated electricity generation, above the production made through hydrocarbons.
Most of the Costa Rican electricity matrix was based on hydraulic production that reached 69.35% of total generation, despite the fact that Costa Rica experienced a drought during the first half of the year.
The Central American country also produced 13.38% of its electricity through geothermal sources, 12.2% through wind sources, 1.4% from biomass energy sources and 0.02% through solar panels.
The executive president of ICE, Carlos Manuel Obregón, stressed that the high clean energy production was mainly due to the fact that in June 99.58% of electricity was generated from renewable sources, thanks to "favorable hydrological patterns".
"According to our projections, we will close 2016 with only 2% thermal production, which will give us essential support to comply with tariff stability," the official added.
The Costa Rican Presidency stressed that thermal production (through hydrocarbons) reached its peak in April, a month in which it represented 10% of total generation due to the reduction in rainfall, which "directly affected hydroelectric plants."
Costa Rica produced 5,242.6 gigawatts of energy in the first six months of 2016, of which only 3.64% was generated through hydrocarbons.
