International. Ministers from the G7 countries – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States – recognise the importance of reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), including hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
"Measures to reduce SLCPs can help decrease the rate of warming in the short term, while releasing significant benefits for human health and food security," the environment ministers said in a statement.
The meeting comes at a crucial time ahead of recent meetings of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in July and October. In line with an agreement reached in Dubai in November 2015, also known as the "Dubai Pathway on HFCs", the countries have committed to work under the Montreal Protocol to deliver an HFC amendment in 2016. The first step in this process is to find viable solutions for managing the remaining challenges in HFCs.
"On measures to address fluorocarbons, we welcome the decision in Dubai by the parties to the Montreal Protocol to treat HFCs under the Montreal Protocol, and support the adoption of a phase-out amendment to HFCs under the Montreal Protocol in 2016," the ministers said.
